Sickness and diseases are a part of contemporary lives. We are affected by ailments which are completely unknown to us or which are beyond our imagination. There are times when the patients do not respond to the most advanced treatment procedure and we get nervous and confused about our next possible step. When such situation arises, then it is wise to contemplate what our ancestors or the generation before us did. There was a time when people treated their ailments with the help of traditional medicines and they lived a much healthy life. In the Muslim community traditional Islamic medicines are used in a big way and these are used to heal many different kinds of diseases.
Hijama is one such ancient treatment procedure that offers relief from many diseases. It is derived from the Arabic word ‘Hajm’ which actually means ‘sucking’. In this procedure cups are applied all over the human body at different points by removing the air from the internal part of the cups to form a vacuum.
There are three different types of cupping available:
• Dry cupping
• Dry massage cupping
• Wet cupping
Hijama is a therapy that can be applied anywhere on the human body especially on the site of pain. This takes the pain away. The place where this therapy is applied is first shaved. This ensures a tight seal with the cups and skin. Traditionally horns were used in place of cups. The modern practitioners use machines, but there are still people who stick to the conventional method of therapy.
But this therapy can never be handled by a practitioner who does not have adequate training in this field. It is practiced in a germ-free and pristine condition. The practitioners always wear gloves and make sure everything is neat and clean. All the tools and equipment that are utilized during this therapy are completely new and those are for single use only. After the completion of the therapy all the equipment are discarded and disposed of.
The various kinds of diseases that can be treated by this therapy are as follows:
Depression and emotional hassles
Common cold and flu
Apart from the treatment there is another thing that is attached to Hijama. There is a religious side to this therapy also. It was practiced by the Prophet (PBUH) himself. So it is actually a Sunnah practicing which can bring people closer to Allah. This therapy offers energy to the human body as it unlocks the meridians in the human body.
